Grapefruit essential oil is most used to assist with lymphatic detoxification, decreasing fluid retention, increasing circulation, decreasing allergic responses, assisting with fat burning and reducing the appearance of cellulite. The invigorating scent of grapefruit oil may help with headaches and mental fatigue. Grapefruit oil has also been used to treat oily hair and assist with acne (proper dilutions should be used, and avoid sun exposure for 12 hours if applied topically). Like any citrus oils, grapefruit is a popular favourite for air fresheners, especially in bathrooms. Grapefruit has potent antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial properties, which make it an excellent choice for DIY cleaners. Grapefruit essential oil may help to relieve muscle aches and pains, including those caused by menstruation and arthritis.

Grapefruit is photosensitive. After application, waiting for at least a few hours before exposing the area to sunlight is recommended. Grapefruit is also toxic to cats.
