Citrus essential oils are a favorite! The smell of citrus oils help to pep you up… naturally. For kids noses, citrus essential oils tend to be the most pleasing and are generally safe to diffuse around them. These oils also have germ killing potential and are great to use in your DIY cleaners.
Some citrus oils can even be great for the skin, showing in some studies to help with cellulite and age spots. HOWEVER, caution needs to be used when applying citrus oils topically as many of them are photosensitive. This means that if you apply it topically, even diluted, and go out in the sun, your skin can have a reaction with the sun that can result in a rash, bubbling of the skin or transdermal bruising. If you are going to use citrus oils on the skin, it should be applied in very low dilutions and at least 12 hrs before sun exposure. There are some exceptions to the citrus = photosensitivity rule, but it’s best just to be overly cautious with topical application or speak first with a certified aromatherapist.
With summer coming fast, here are some suggestions for citrus blends that can be diffused in the house or mixed in a spray bottle for use as a countertop cleaner. The uplifting smell is sure to bring a better mood into the home.
